Greg Selinger Will be the Next Premier of Manitoba

Posted by Devin Johnston on September 28th, 2009

The Winnipeg Free Press is reporting that Andrew Swan has dropped out of the Manitoba NDP leadership race (h/t Never Eat Yellow Snow). Given that Greg Selinger already has a lead in delegate support and given that Swan's delegates will likely fall to Selinger, I think that this race is pretty much in the bag. Steve Ashton will need to make some major gains very quickly in order to overtake Selinger in delegate support. Please note that this entry is a prediction, not an endorsement.

Actually, I think Ashton took

Actually, I think Ashton took the lead over the weekend by cleaning up up north (18/18 in Flin Flon, 83/83 in Thompson, 117/120 in The Pas), and rumour has it he has a lot of support in biggies like Inkster, the Maples and Fort Whyte.

I wouldn't make the mistake of underestimating Ashton - this race is probably closer than most people think. A lot of people have been underestimating Ashton from the start and have been eating a lot of crow for it.

It's definitely quite

It's definitely quite possible for Ashton to still make a run, particularly given that the northern ridings (where he is strongest) have large memberships. That said, I think it's fair to say that most of the heavyweights in the party are now firmly behind Selinger.

heavyweights...

Andrew Swan had a lot of heavyweights behind him. How did Swan do in Mackintosh and Chomiak's riding?

Somewhere along the line the Swan and Selinger campaign forgot that leadership races are about the members, not the politicians. While they collected endorsements, Ashton drove up the membership numbers.

I don't think there is any doubt that currently Selinger is the odds on favourite to win. That said, Ashton sold a ton of memberships and is winning all of the big constituencies so far. Ashton is the leader at this point, and if he keeps winning the big constituencies (like the Maples, Inkster and Fort Whyte), I think he has a real shot at this. No one thought he'd be leading at this point, but he is.

Personally, i think this race is too close to call.

Steve Ashton was at the Legistlative Building Yesterday and i got the privilage to hear him speak. Trust me he's got more votes coming his way.
