Newly minted Manitoba Premier Greg Selinger has announced his cabinet:

I have so far resisted throwing my support behind any of the candidates to succeed Gary Doer as leader of the Manitoba NDP and Premier of Manitoba. In part, this is because I am waiting to see where the candidates come down on the public policy issues that are of interest and concern to me. As regular readers of my blog will know, I am particularly interested in post-secondary education policy as it relates to accessibility and strategic investment in human capital. To that end, I have been a vocal supporter of reductions in tuition fees for college and university.

Northern BC Dipper has already covered this issue in a post from 2007, but I'd like to add my voice to the chorus of democrats who favour "one member, one vote" (OMOV). The upcoming Manitoba NDP Leadership Convention will, unfortunately, use an archaic delegate system which disenfranchises the majority of party members.

This is a quick update to my earlier posts regarding the Manitoba NDP leadership race. There are now two declared candidates in the race: Andrew Swan (MLA for Minto and Minister for Competitiveness, Training, and Trade) and Steve Ashton (MLA for Thompson and Minister of Intergovernmental Affairs). The leadership convention will be held on October 17. I will wait to see what the candidates have to offer before making any endorsements, though I'm pleased to see that MYND colleague (and federal candidate of record in Saint Boniface) Matt Schaubroeck will serve as co-chair for the Andrew Swan for Premier Campaign Committee.

Today, Andrew Swan became the first to officially announce his candidacy to succeed Gary Doer as leader of the Manitoba NDP and Premier of Manitoba. Swan's announcement is also notable because some of the other rumoured candidates were present at the press conference endorsing him. Swan is the only candidate officially in the race, while Steve Ashton and Greg Selinger remain possible challengers. We have so far ruled out Bill Blaikie, Pat Martin, Judy Wasylycia-Leis, Gord Mackintosh, Nancy Allan, Christine Melnick, Theresa Oswald, and Stan Struthers.
